At Total Occupational Medicine, your health and safety are our highest priorities. We are honored to be part of the Urgent Care Association (UCA) and the College of Urgent Care Medicine® (CUCM) Antibiotic Stewardship Commendation program. This recognition highlights our dedication to responsible antibiotic prescribing practices and our commitment to excellence in urgent care.
What is Antibiotic Resistance?
Antibiotics are essential medicines for treating bacterial infections. However, their overuse or misuse can lead to antibiotic resistance, where bacteria evolve to withstand these treatments. As a result, infections become more difficult to treat, increasing the risk of severe complications and making illnesses harder to cure.
Why We Limit Antibiotics at Total Occupational Medicine
Many common illnesses, such as colds, the flu, most sore throats, and certain sinus or ear infections, are caused by viruses, not bacteria. Because antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections, using them to treat viral illnesses is not only ineffective but also contributes to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.
Limiting antibiotic prescriptions offers several key benefits:
- Minimizes the risk of side effects like nausea, diarrhea or allergic reactions
- Slows the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria
- Preserves the effectiveness of antibiotics for treating serious conditions in the future

When Are Antibiotics Necessary?
Our medical team thoroughly assesses each patient to develop the most effective treatment plan. Antibiotics may be prescribed to address bacterial infections, including:
- Urinary tract infections
- Strep throat
- Certain ear infections
- Bacterial pneumonia
If antibiotics are not necessary, we will suggest alternative treatments to alleviate symptoms and promote a faster recovery.
How You Can Help Prevent Antibiotic Resistance
Your actions are crucial in combating antibiotic resistance. Here’s what you can do:
- Use antibiotics responsibly: If prescribed, take them exactly as directed and complete the full course, even if you start feeling better.
- Follow your provider’s guidance: If antibiotics aren’t needed, trust that we will recommend the most effective alternative treatments.
